COMPUTER
OR, COMPUTER REVOLUTION IN INDIA
Computer revolution is at its height in some advanced countries of the east
and west. India also declared its computer policy in November, 1984. It has
opened a new chapter of computer revolution in the history of India.
The first computer in Indiawas built in 1966 by Tata Institute of Fundamental
Reseach, Bombay, The establishment of the Electronics Corporation of India
and taking by it the manufacturing of computer on a commercial basis have
given further momentum to the computer revolution in India. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi
said that electronics can ensure better future for India. He said that the use of
electronics will not accentuate the problem ofunemployment on the other hand
it will provide employment to larger number of people. Use ofelectronics can be
safely and effectively made in agriculture for soil testing, weather forecasting
etc.
The use of computer in military, post and telegraph, commerce and industry
and education will revolutionise the working of these departments and other
fields of life. Educational work is being done with the help ofcomputers inmany
colleges of India. Computer has been found of immense use in the statistical
department for the purpose of data analysis and prediction of results.
Now computer has been introduced in India. Let us, however, be warned
that computer does not grow food, does not move the wheels ofindustry to turn
out more and more finished goods. It does not itselfreduce illiteracy. Hence we
should first try to become self-reliant in all fields, raise. standard of living and
quality oflife of our people. Then alone, the use of computer will be meaningful.
